- Arrival in Stāmeriena.
Stāmeriena Castle.
The castle was built in the 1830s, but when the 1905 revolution broke out, Stāmeriena became an important center of rebellion, and during the fighting, the revolutionaries burned down the castle. It was restored in 1908, taking on a new appearance—as a result of the reconstruction work, the castle acquired features of Neoclassicism and Art Nouveau. In the 1930s, the world-famous Italian author of the novel
“The Leopard,” Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, who was married to Baroness Alexandra von Wolf. The last owner of Stāmeriena Castle was Baron Andrejs Pilars von Pilhau, Alexandra von Wolf’s first husband. In the late 1930s, the owners were forced to leave their homeland; during World War II, the building was used for military purposes; from 1945 to 1965, it housed an agricultural technical school, and later served as the office of the Soviet collective farm “Stāmeriena” and the village council’s executive committee. Since 2015, the castle has been open to visitors.

Stāmeriena Castle is surrounded by both a landscape-style park and lakes: Stāmeriena Lake to the west and Pogas Lake to the northwest. The two lakes are connected by a canal that flows through the castle park. The pride of the park is the “Oaks of Love,” which are the subject of a legend: the castle gardener fell in love with the baron’s daughter, but she was already betrothed to another baron. On the daughter’s wedding day, the gardener planted two oak trees and tied them together. They continue to grow to this day.

- The Orthodox Church of St. Alexander Nevsky in Stāmeriena.
The cornerstone was laid on June 29, 1902, and construction was completed with a consecration ceremony held on June 6, 1904. The old church building was demolished that same year. The church was built because, at that time, some of the parish residents were Orthodox Christians, and the owner of the Stāmeriena estate, Johann Gottlieb Eduard von Wolf, was married to a Russian woman, Sofia Potemkin. The mountain crystals, which sparkle in the sunlight on the crosses atop the church towers, were a gift from Barons Boris and Paul Wolf. Today, the church has been restored to its former splendor.
