The Fish and Onion Fair and Lake Peipus!

Main information
Fish and Onion Fair and Lake Peipus!
August 29, 2026
55 EUR

Departure from Daugavpils.

The natural and traditional surroundings of Peipsi are as diverse and nuanced as the history of Estonia. Here you’ll see an aristocratic manor and colorful houses lining the Onion Road, as well as experience traditional market trading.
The Peipus region is home to Old Believers, and these members of a traditional religious minority are considered hardworking people, skilled fishermen, carpenters, and passionate onion growers.

- We’ll take part in the day’s main event—the Kallaste Fish and Onion Fair, which has become the closing event of the summer in the Lake Peipus region. Kallaste, the Pomor Old Believer village known as “Red Hills,” draws people from Estonia and neighboring countries. Our tour will allow plenty of time for the market—both for browsing and shopping. There will be a variety of Estonian handicrafts, farm products, and delicacies from Lake Peipus, but the highlight is the region’s famous onions! For Old Believer families, they grow best in raised beds, along with their skill in storing the onions in heavy, decorated wicker baskets. You’ll also enjoy a cultural program from Southern Estonia—songs, dances, and workshops—along with lake fish soup and other delicious market treats, as well as short boat rides on the lake. We’ll buy onion braids, onions in bags, or dried fish, as desired.

- We’ll visit Kostja’s onion farm, the largest onion plantation on the shores of Lake Peipus! Konstantin, the owner of the onion farm, will introduce us to traditional Old Believer onion-growing methods, explain how onions were grown in the old days and how locals today plant, harvest, and sell their crops. Plus, the farm’s hostess bakes melt-in-your-mouth onion pies!

Let’s enjoy these delicious onion pies with some tea!
